Competitions: Participation in the Macra competitions
calendar provides members with an opportunity to acquire the skills and
self-confidence they need to reach their personal targets in life.
Competitions are also about having fun with fellow competitors. Performing
Arts Macra
Na Feirme’s performing arts programme plays an
important role in many clubs around the country. From drama competitions to
disco dancing, Macra members get involved in a wide
range of performing arts activities and are encouraged to examine their own
rural background through arts. Some examples of Macra’s
arts and culture-based activities include: Amateur Drama Competition: Amateur drama helps club members develop dramatic skills,
it helps to introduce members to the world of theatre, and develop creativity
in production, stage setting and stage management. Carrigaline
Macra has a proud tradition in Drama and has won
the competition on a number of occasions and is regulars in the finals. Macra Capers Competition: Teams
produce a light entertainment variety show. There should be a good balance
between items musical, choral, dancing, comedy, etc. National Talent Competition: This
competition is comprised of eight different categories. Each of the eight
events is entirely separate and a club can compete in just one event or any
number of events. The eight categories are Disco Dancing, Solo Instrumental
Music, Novelty Act, Solo Singing, Mastermind, Set Dancing, Comedy,
Pop/Folk/Ballad Group. National Club Question Time: This competition is to encourage members to increase their
general knowledge. There are team and individual rounds. National
Public Speaking Competition: This competition is designed as an introduction into public
speaking. It helps members acquire both the confidence and skills required to
speak in public. It also encourages members to research topics of general
interest and of public concern. Impromtu Public Speaking: This is an individual competition where a
random topic is pulled from a hat and the individual must discuss this topic
for three minutes. National Farm Skills: This competition tests farm practises,
through an academic test, the erection of a stock proof fence/gate hanging,
tractor teamwork, and a lambing pen. Dairy/Beef/Sheep Stockjudging: These competitions help members in the skill
of assessing stock, it helps to broaden the young farmer’s knowledge for
stock breeding and husbandry skills. National Debating: This competition encourages members to
research a project and to be able to express their point of view in a debate.
They must present their argument clearly and be critically appraising an
opposing view. Impromtu Debating: Same as normal debating except that teams receive topics,
then they get 30 minutes to prepare before having the debate. Young Farmer Of The Future: This competition judges young farmers on a
number of issues regarding their business, from general knowledge, finances,
vision for the future, safety, environment, community involvement, etc.. Miss Macra: Miss macra
competition involves an interview with judges, an on stage interview and
party piece. The Miss macra winner qualifies for
the international festival which is held in Tipperary. There the contestants
are put through their paces in a competition that compares to a mini Rose of
Tralee. Miss Blue
Jeans Festival: This
festival is similar to the Miss macra competition
expect it is a little less formal. The village of Athboy
Co. Meath is taken over for a weekend where locals and visitors enjoy the
craic of all different events. |
